01 mayo 2025.- En 1886 fueron ejecutados trabajadores de Estados Unidos tras realizar una serie de huelgas en reclamo de mejores condiciones laborales.

El 1º de mayo de cada año se conmemora el Día Internacional del Trabajador en homenaje a los "Mártires de Chicago", así denominado un grupo de sindicalistas anarquistas que fueron ejecutados en 1886 en Estados Unidos por realizar un reclamo laboral.

Los trabajadores demandaban la reducción de la jornada laboral a 8 horas, ya que solían trabajar hasta 16 horas diarias. Ante la presión de los paros el presidente de Estados Unidos, Andrew Johnson, promulgó una ley que establecía las 8 horas de trabajo diario.

MÁS DE 80 MIL TRABAJADORES PARARON EL 1ro. DE MAYO

Sin embargo, el sector empresarial decidió no acatar, por lo que los trabajadores de la ciudad industrial de Chicago iniciaron una huelga el 1º de mayo. Un movimiento liderado por Albert Pearsons juntó a más de 80 mil trabajadores. Fue calificado como "indignante e irrespetuoso" y como un "delirio de lunáticos poco patriotas".

Para los que lo criticaban, el pedido era "lo mismo que pedir que se pague un salario sin cumplir ninguna hora de trabajo". El conflicto se extendió a otras ciudades y terminaron parando más de 400.000 obreros en 5.000 huelgas simultáneas. Tanto el gobierno como el sector empresarial creían que estaban ante el inicio de una revolución anarquista.

CONDENADOS A TRABAJOS FORZADOS Y LA HORCA

La fábrica McCormick de Chicago no reconoció la victoria de los trabajadores y el 1º de mayo la policía disparó contra los manifestantes en las puertas de la empresa. Los días siguientes murieron más trabajadores hasta que el cuarto día estalló una bomba contra las fuerzas policiales en un suceso conocido como "el atentado de Haymarket".

El 21 de junio comenzó el juicio a 31 obreros acusados de haber sido los presuntos promotores del conflicto. Condenaron a dos de ellos a cadena perpetua, uno a 15 años de trabajos forzados y cinco a la muerte en la horca. Estas 8 personas se convirtieron en los Mártires de Chicago, y en su conmemoración se declaró que el 1° de mayo sería el Día Internacional del Trabajador.
